Oswald Schumann (born December 11, 1865 in Borzenzine , Trachenberg (Silesia), † June 9, 1939 in Petershagen near Berlin) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ).

Live and act

Schumann was born in 1865 as the son of a miller. From 1872 to 1879 he attended the elementary school in Borzenzine. He then worked for three years as a railroad worker in Beuthen in Upper Silesia. Then he went to Breslau and Berlin as a trade and transport worker . He later took up residence in Mahlsdorf near Berlin. As a young man, Schumann joined the SPD, in which he belonged to the right wing of the party. From January 1, 1897 to December 31, 1929, Schumann was chairman of the German Transport Workers' Association (from 1923: German Transport Association). In 1905 he became a member of the General Commission of the German Trade Unions , which was a member until 1919. From 1908 to 1919 Schumann was a member of the Mahlsdorf council.

In January 1912 Schumann was elected as his party's candidate for the constituency of Frankfurt an der Oder 8 in the Reichstag , to which he initially belonged until the collapse of the German Empire in November 1918. Together with Friedrich Rauch , Schumann was one of the first two unskilled workers to win a seat in the Reichstag in this election.

On November 14, 1918, Schumann was appointed as an alderman for the demobilization office.

From January 1919 to June 1920 Schumann was a member of the Weimar National Assembly , in which he represented constituency 6 (Frankfurt an der Oder). In June 1920 Schumann was elected to the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic for constituency 5 (Frankfurt an der Oder) , to which he was a member until July 1932. His mandate was confirmed four times - in May and December 1924, May 1928 and September 1930 - in elections. In addition, he was a member of the board of directors of the Deutsche Reichspost from April 1924 to 1933 . From 1930 to November 1932 Schumann was one of the chairmen of the General Association of Employees in Public Enterprises and the Movement of People and Goods .

After the National Socialist " seizure of power ", Schumann was taken into " protective custody " as one of the leaders of the General German Trade Union Confederation , from which he was released on June 10, 1933.
