Rudiger Zimmermann

Rüdiger Wolfgang Zimmermann (born October 22, 1946 in Aalborg ) is a German historian and academic librarian . From 1996 to 2011 he was the head of the library of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Bonn .

Life

Rüdiger Zimmermann studied history, political science and geography at the Technical University of Darmstadt . As a scholarship holder of the Mitbestigung Foundation (forerunner of the Hans Böckler Foundation ) Zimmermann received his doctorate in 1976 from Arcadius Gurland with a thesis on the left-communist Lenin League . From 1975 Zimmermann was a trainee librarian at the University Library in Düsseldorf and at the Librarian Training Institute in Cologne. In 1977 he passed the assessor exam . In the same year he began his work as a specialist in the library of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung . From 1996 until his retirement in October 2011, Zimmermann was head of the library. In addition, from 1998 to 2006 Zimmermann was a reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the field of scientific literature supply and information systems and from 1998 to 2011 a board member of the International Association of Labor History Institutions (IALHI). From 2009 to 2011 he was a member of the board of trustees of the Foundation Archive of Parties and Mass Organizations of the GDR in the Federal Archives (SAPMO).

Zimmermann is married, has three children and lives in Bonn.

Act

As a historian, Zimmermann has done research on the history of the social democratic trade union and labor movement in Germany , its institutions and important personalities as well as the history of the Dietz publishing house . In his function as a scientific librarian, Zimmermann not only devoted himself to indexing and securing the sources of the printed memory of the German social democracy and the German trade unions, but also tried to popularize them with numerous exhibitions and source editions. In addition, Zimmermann was a key promoter of the international collaboration between libraries and archives on the history of the labor movement within the framework of IALHI.
