Otites guttatus , syn. Otites guttata is a species from the family of flies (Ulidiidae).
features
The flies reach a body length of 5 to 7 millimeters, the wing length is 4.2-5.6 mm. Their bodies are densely dusted with gray. The mesonotum has two brown longitudinal stripes at the base, which are not pollinated and which end well before the scutellum . The abdomen is pale brown in color. The head has a broad orange-red vertical stripe on the fron . In addition, the front sides are slightly protruding. The legs are dark. The wings are marbled brown with a characteristic white spot pattern.
Similar species
- Otites centralis , smaller species of fly that usually flies a little earlier; the wing pattern and veining as well as the head shape are slightly different
distribution
Otites guttatus is widespread in Central and Eastern Europe. The species is also represented in England. It is apparently absent in Scandinavia and the Iberian Peninsula .
Way of life
Otites guttatus is considered a common spring species. The flies are seen from April to July. They are mostly found in sparse forests, especially those with oaks, on the edges of the forest and in dry meadow biotopes. They are flower visitors of umbellifers (Apiaceae) and apparently feed u. a. of honeydew that you find on leaves. Little is known about the life cycle. The larvae are possibly bound to grass-like plants, an old statement about a special connection to the whitish grove ( Luzula luzuloides ), which prefers acidic locations, appears rather doubtful according to more recent observations.
