Otrere

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otrere or Otrera ( ancient Greek Ὀτρήρη ) is a queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology .

She is the lover of the Olympian god of war Ares and from him the mother of Penthesilea , occasionally named as her daughter Hippolyte , who is accidentally killed elsewhere by Penthesilea. Usually she appears as the sole ruler of the Amazons, but is also named together with her daughter Antiope as the ruler of a double kingship .

Otrere was considered to be the builder of the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus (near today's Selçuk on the southwest coast of Turkey ), or together with Antiope as the builder of an Ares Temple, which they built when they went out to war.
