Ottilie Goeth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ottilie Fuchs Goeth (born February 27, 1836 in Kölzow, today part of Dettmannsdorf ; † May 23, 1926 at the Goeth Ranch near Cypress Mill , Blanco County , Texas ) was a German-American author.

Life

Ottilie Fuchs was one of seven children of Adolf Fuchs, the pastor of the Kölzow village church, and his wife Louise, b. Rümcker (* 1809). The family emigrated to Texas in 1845 . In honor of their departure, August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben , who at that time was living in exile in Mecklenburg on Gut Hohenfelde, wrote the farewell song Der Stern von Texas on October 10, 1845 . The Hoffmann collection of Texan songs from the following year was also inspired by Fuchs, who is also mentioned in the publisher's statement San Felipe de Austin bei Adolf Fuchs & Co. (deliberately wrong to circumvent the German censorship laws) .

In December 1853, the Fuchs family succeeded in having their claim recognized and in possession of the Lüder grant at Marble Falls in Burnet County . The family was one of the first settlers west of the Colorado River (Texas) .

Ottilie married the farmer and later politician Carl Alexander Goeth (1835–1912) and had eight children, six of whom reached adulthood.

Her autobiography was published in German in San Antonio in 1915 under the title Was grandmother tells. In 1969, Irma Goeth Guenther published an English translation of Memoirs of a Texas Pioneer Grandmother , the second edition of which appeared in 1982. The work, written in the style of the German educational novel , is considered one of the most important works in Texas German literature.
