The Otto-Nagel-Straße is a leading from south to north street in Berlin district Biesdorf in the area north of the Bundesstrasse 1 . It runs from the Kulmseestraße to Cecilienstraße and includes in Horseshoe numbering the house numbers 1 to 138. Between 1906 and May 30, 1968, she was called King's Road .

history

In 1901, the Colonie Biesdorf-Nord was founded in Biesdorf-Nord and numerous roads were laid out in a grid to develop it. One of these traffic routes was the Königstrasse , the name of which generally referred to a king .

The first Biesdorf fruit and garden exhibition took place in Königstrasse 120 in 1911. Because of the great popularity, the garden exhibition was celebrated as a flower festival for one week in the Biesdorf Castle Park from the mid-1930s . In 2000 this tradition was taken up again. The area at Otto-Nagel-Straße 120 was built on with residential houses in the 1970s, so the restaurant and cinema building are no longer preserved.

In addition to small residential buildings, grocery stores, a drugstore, two restaurants (including on parcel number 120) and small craft firms were built on this street.

It is also worth mentioning that two cinemas opened in Königstrasse in the 1920s : the Capitol (Schiller Festsaal) in house number 120 and the Biesdorfer Lichtspiele in house number 17 , both with more than 200 seats each. The Biesdorfer Lichtspiele were closed in the mid-1930s, and the Capitol ceased operations in Königstrasse at the end of the Second World War . (see also the list of cinemas in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district ).

After the incorporation of most of the villages around Berlin in 1920, there were numerous multiple street names in Greater Berlin , including several royal streets . These should be reduced by giving them new names, but Königstrasse in Biesdorf kept its street name. After Oberfeldstrasse ( newly formed and renamed from Bahnhofstrasse and Marzahner Strasse in 1935 ), it served as a means of transporting the residents and supplies them with everyday items in Biesdorf-Nord.

In a publication by the actor Hardy Krüger there is a reference that his family was able to move into a house next to the Capitol cinema in 1934 , which an uncle had given them from the USA . The acquaintance with the projectionist made Krüger very interested in the film industry.

After the end of World War II, there were no restaurants or shops here. In the 2010s there were only two shops left on this street: a car service and a design studio.

Former home of Otto Nagel

From 1951 to 1967 the artist and graphic artist Otto Nagel lived and worked in Königstrasse number 4–6. After his death, the street was renamed Otto-Nagel-Straße in his honor on May 30, 1968. A copper plaque was attached to his former home . The house, built around 1930 and later slightly rebuilt, is also a listed building. After the political change , the street name was up for discussion because some residents and representatives of city authorities wanted to rename it to Königstraße . After controversial discussions, however, the decision was made in favor of the artist Otto Nagel.

Stumbling blocks

In front of houses number 19 and number 38, a total of four stumbling blocks for former residents have been laid, whose fate is remembered here.
