Otto Albrecht (theologian)

Otto Wilhelm Ferdinand Albrecht (born December 2, 1855 in Angermünde , † May 3, 1939 in Bethel near Bielefeld ) was a German Protestant pastor and theologian. He is best known for his contributions to Luther research.

Life

Albrecht was the son of the superintendent and district school inspector in Angermünde. After graduating from high school in Potsdam, he studied philosophy and evangelical theology at the University of Halle from 1873 . This was followed by practical training at the Wittenberg seminary . In 1880 he was in Wittenberg ordained and entered in 1881 his first pastorate in Stödten on. In 1884 he moved to Dachwig and in 1892 to the Marien-Magdalenen-Kirche in Naumburg (Saale) . In 1907/08 he acted as acting representative for the superintendent.

In addition to his pastoral office, Albrecht also worked as a church historian. Since 1892 he was a member of the commission for the publication of the Weimar Luther edition . Among other things, he was responsible for the edition of Luther's Large and Small Catechism , which appeared in 1910 as volume 30. He also worked on the translation of the Bible. His monograph on catechisms has long been considered a standard work. After the death of Gustav Kawerau he was in charge of the register volumes of the edition of Luther's letters begun by Ernst Ludwig Enders and continued by Kawerau.

In 1922 he was appointed honorary professor by the University of Halle .
