Otto Bally

Otto Bally (born April 14, 1839 in Säckingen ; † April 17, 1908 there ; full name: Johann Urban Otto Bally ) was a German entrepreneur and local researcher .

His grandfather Peter Bally was the founder of the Bally shoe factories in Schönenwerd near Aarau . His father Jean Bally took over the (large) father's silk ribbon weaving mill in Säckingen together with his brothers Peter and Theodor in 1849 . After attending primary school, he went to a private school in Wabern near Bern, after which he and his brother attended the commercial school in Lausanne and then the Leipzig commercial academy. During stays abroad he learned Italian, French and English.

Together with his younger brother Emil and his cousin Armand, he expanded and modernized their parents' business. He was a member of associations and city politics and was appointed to the Council of Commerce by the Grand Duke of Baden . He collected coins and medals, but also antiques and art. He was friends with Hans Thoma and Viktor von Scheffel .
