Kemal Satır (born April 21, 1911 in Adana , † May 23, 1991 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish politician . He was a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly , Minister of Transport in 1949/50 and Deputy Prime Minister between 1963 and 1965 and 1973/74.

Life

Satır attended the Adana Lisesi and then studied human medicine at the Istanbul Universitesi until 1936 . From 1937 he worked as a radiologist. He became a member of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) early on . Between 1943 and 1950 Satır was a member of the Turkish National Assembly for Adana Province and Minister of Transport in the cabinet of Şemsettin Günaltay in 1949/50 .

After the CHP lost votes in the parliamentary election in 1950, Satır lost his seat in parliament and went back to work as a medic. In the 1957 election, Satır became a Member of Parliament for Elazığ Province and in 1969 was a Member of Parliament for Adana. Between 1963 and 1965 he was Deputy Prime Minister under İsmet İnönü .

Kemal Satır was also involved in the party. From 1962 to 1966 he was Secretary General of the CHP. As a moderate politician, he tried to mediate between Bülent Ecevit and Turhan Feyzioğlu , who were fighting over the party's course. After Turhan Feyzioğlu left the party and founded his own party, Satır became one of the greatest opponents of Ecevit's left-wing course. When Bülent Ecevit became chairman of the CHP, Kemal Satır left the party with some MPs.

Together they founded the Cumhuriyetçi Parti (CP) on September 4, 1972 and Satır became chairman. The party only existed briefly: on February 28, 1973 it merged with the Cumhuriyetçi Güven Partisi of Turhan Feyzioğlu. Feyzioğlu remained in office as chairman, and Satır became his deputy. Under Naim Talu he was again Deputy Prime Minister.

The party suffered heavy losses in the 1973 general election and Kemal Satır retired from politics and served on the boards of two banks.
