Otto Bitthorn

Otto Bitthorn (born June 2, 1880 in Tettenborn , † July 1, 1953 in Hameln ) was a German lieutenant general who worked as a department head for army technical schools and insurance in the Reich Ministry of Defense until 1933 .

Life

He came from the administrative district of Erfurt in the Prussian province of Saxony and grew up in the Grafschaft Hohenstein district . After attending school, he embarked on a military career in the fall of 1898 and became an ensign in 1899 and a lieutenant in the 159th Infantry Regiment the following year. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1909. After he had been appointed captain in 1913, he took part in the war after the outbreak of World War I and was promoted to major on May 18, 1918. As such, he worked in the War Ministry in Berlin and from 1919 to 1925 worked as a major and consultant in the Reichswehr Ministry. During this time he was promoted to lieutenant in 1924. After a two-year assignment as commander in the training battalion of the 2nd Infantry Regiment, Otto Bitthorn was promoted to head of department for army technical schools and insurance in the Reichswehr Ministry in 1927 and as such promoted to colonel in 1929 and major general in 1932. In connection with the seizure of power by the National Socialists , he resigned from active service as Lieutenant General on January 31, 1933 and retired at the age of 53, which he spent in Berlin-Wilmersdorf , Wittelsbacherstraße 4. He died in Hameln in 1953.

Otto Bitthorn was a member of the Presidium of the Reich Scatter League of former professional soldiers , which in 1936 joined the Association of German Fighter Associations .
