The Catholic parish church of Saint-Germain-de-Paris in Hardricourt , a parish in the Yvelines department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built in the first half of the 12th century. The church is dedicated to St. Germanus of Paris and belongs to the diocese of Versailles . In 1875, the Romanesque bell tower was added to the list of architectural monuments ( Base Mérimée ) in France as Monument historique .

history

Between 1120 and 1150, monks from the Saint-Nicaise priory in Meulan had the current church built on the site of a burned down chapel. In the 14th century, the church came into the possession of the Benedictine Abbey Notre-Dame du Bec-Hellouin in Le Bec-Hellouin in what is now the Eure department in Normandy . The abbey had extensive alterations and restoration work carried out. As can be seen from an inscription on a pillar in the transept, the church was re-consecrated in 1509. Until the French Revolution , the church belonged to the Diocese of Rouen .

architecture

Bell tower

The 29-meter-high, three-story bell tower rises above the crossing . It dates back to the 12th century and is the oldest part of the church. The bell storey is broken through on all four sides by domed , arched sound arcades . The tower is crowned by an eight-sided, stone pyramid , at the corners of which sit four smaller pyramids decorated with finials .

inner space

The single-nave nave is covered by a wooden barrel . On the north side of the nave, four walled-up arcades are reminiscent of the broken-off north aisle. Flat-roofed chapels adjoin the crossing and the choir bay in the north and south. The choir yoke and the crossing have ribbed vaults . The flat roofed choir opens into a semicircular closed apse .

A piscina framed by a three-pass arch is cut into a pillar in the choir . Romanesque capitals from the construction period are still preserved on the columns under the crossing . Some are decorated with cap capitals, two capitals have fine acanthus leaves . In addition to the capitals, figuratively designed consoles can be seen on which the vault ribs rest. The base of a column under the crossing was exposed again.

Leaded glass window

Saint Germanus of Paris

The leaded glass windows date from the 19th century. On them are shown John the Baptist , a Madonna in a halo and the instruction of Mary. The central window of the apse with the depiction of St. Germanus of Paris, the patron of the church, bears the signature "1869 Ména à Paris".

Furnishing

  • The limestone baptismal font dates from the first half of the 12th century, when the church was built. The square basin has a palmette decoration on the edge . It rests on a double column with capitals decorated with acanthus leaves.
  • Four wood-carved choir stalls from the 14th century have been preserved in the church.
