Follmann attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Trier , which he completed in 1878 with the acquisition of the Abitur. After completing his doctorate, Follmann initially worked as an assistant at the geological institute in Bonn and aimed for a career as a university lecturer. However, since he did not have sufficient financial means to bridge a long waiting period for a professorship, he initially accepted a position as an assistant teacher at a Bonn grammar school and finally in 1889 became a teacher of mathematics and natural sciences at the Kaiserin Augusta grammar school in Koblenz. He worked there until his retirement in 1923. In addition to his work as a teacher, he continued to research and publish on the geology and palaeontology of the Eifel and was considered a respected expert in this field. The University of Bonn appointed him honorary professor for his achievements in 1908 .

In the course of 1926 Follmann fell seriously ill and died on June 11 of the same year as a result of his illness.

The Otto-Follmann street in his native country Scheid and Follmannstraße in the district of Koblenz gold mine are named after him. In archaeobotany , several types of lichen bear his name and the associated genus Follmannia .
