Otto Gibel
Otto Gibel (also: Gibelius; * 1612 in Burg auf Fehmarn ; † October 20, 1682 in Minden ) was a music theorist, composer and teacher.
Live and act
Otto Gibel's father, Abraham Gibelius, was provost in Burg on Fehmarn. Since the plague raged on Fehmarn, Otto Gibel left the island and moved to live with relatives in Braunschweig, where he received his training at the Katharinenschule. From 1631 he received music lessons there from Heinrich Grimm , a student of Michael Praetorius . In 1634 Gibel got a job as a cantor in Stadthagen and in 1642 he was appointed as a teacher at the Latin school in Minden . In 1649 he was given the position of cantor here, which he held until the end of his life.
Gibel was considered one of the most important music theorists and school singing teachers of his time, who conveyed a wide range of musical and theoretical knowledge in his writings. He used a system of tone syllables, the solmization , for school education . As a composer, Gibel mastered the musical styles and forms of his time.
Johann Mattheson wrote about Gibel in his basis of an Ehrenpforte (1740): “I believe that a thousand go to universities and spend many years there, which do not equal this man, who has not attended any of them, in learning, especially musical . "
