Otto Haupt (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Haupt (born August 4, 1891 in Brno , † January 2, 1966 in Karlsruhe ) was a German architect , craftsman and university professor . Its architecture is influenced by the new building ; He was committed to functional, no-frills interior design and everyday handicrafts.

Life

After finishing school in Cologne , Otto Haupt studied architecture in Berlin, Munich and Karlsruhe. During his studies he became a member of the Academic Association Motiv . After passing the 2nd state examination in Berlin, he worked as a freelance architect, then as head of the Reichsbank's design office . In 1927 he took up a position as professor and director of the Pforzheim School of Applied Arts and soon afterwards received a teaching position at the Technical University of Karlsruhe .

From 1934 to 1947 (and again from 1949 to 1956) he was director of the Badische Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe, where he taught architecture. In 1937 he accepted a position as a full professor of architecture at the TH Karlsruhe. In this position he succeeded Max Laeuger . From 1952 to 1954 he also served as the rector of this university. 1948–1966 he was chairman of the Badischer Kunstgewerbeverein , 1963–1964 also chairman of the German Werkbund .

With his reduced interior design style, free of historicizing or folkloric ingredients, he emphasized a technical and artistic continuity between the designs of the Weimar period and the first 20 post-war years; With arguments in his field, he was able to differentiate himself from the gigantomania and the German-style eclecticism of the years of Nazi rule and was therefore universally recognized in this period after 1945, despite his offices. In close cooperation with the Badisches Landesgewerbeamt Karlsruhe , he brought regional handicrafts ( tapestries , majolica , glass and metalwork, furniture design) to a new bloom after the war.
