Otto Hermann

Otto Hermann (born December 1, jul. / 13. December  1878 greg. In Tartu , Livonia ; † 17th October 1933 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer and conductor .

Life

Otto Hermann first studied music in Tallinn with the Estonian composer Konstantin Türnpu and with the organist of the Tallinn Cathedral , Ernst Reinicke . Hermann then attended the organ class with Louis Homilius at the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1898 to 1900 .

After completing his studies, Hermann worked as an organist and music teacher. From 1906 to 1908 he was the first musical director of the Estonia Opera House in Tallinn and its chief conductor. He organized and directed the first symphony concerts in the Estonian capital.

Today Otto Hermann is buried in the Keila cemetery.

Hermann also composed choral and solo songs as well as some works for orchestra. The best known are the “Spring Symphony” ( Kevade sümfoonia , 1924), the five symphonic poems, four orchestral suites and the incidental music for Franz Grillparzer's drama The Argonauten . In 1926 Hermann composed the opera “Ilo”, but it was never performed.
