Otto Jarl (born April 10, 1856 at Ekholmen Castle in Uppland , † November 16, 1915 in Vienna - Währing ) was an Austrian sculptor from Sweden .

Live and act

He studied in Stockholm at the Tekniska skolan (technical school) and at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . Jarl, son-in-law of Friedrich von Schmidt (daughter: Frida; 1853–1905), was primarily recognized as an animal trainer. One of his best-known works was a seated lion as a memorial for Major Hackher , the defender of the Graz Schloßberg against the French siege in 1809. The memorial, erected in 1909, was melted down in 1943 and in 1966 by a freely perceived reproduction by Wilhelm Gösser (1881–1966) replaced at the original stand.

Jarl's daughter Karin Jarl-Sakellarios was also a sculptor.

Otto Jarl died in his apartment at Theresiengasse 16, Vienna-Währing, and was buried in the family crypt in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 31 B, Row 13, No. 23).

In honor of the artist, a traffic area was named Jarlweg in Graz - Puntigam in 1929 , and in 1959 in Vienna- Favoriten .
