Otto Keck (born March 20, 1873 in Oberstaufen ; † April 8, 1948 in Immenstadt im Allgäu ) developed from an innkeeper and butcher to a painter of the Allgäu .

Life

Otto Keck was born in 1873 as the son of master butcher and innkeeper Peter Paul Keck and his wife Theresia. Until 1886 he attended the elementary school in Oberstaufen, after the family moved to Blaichach, in addition to working in his parents' butcher's and restaurant business, he continued to attend the local Sunday and holiday school, where his talent for drawing was noticed. But he should take his father's path professionally. His family came to Weiler im Allgäu via Untermaiselstein.

During his military service (1895–1897) in Munich, he got to know the large picture galleries and exhibitions. He then became a Forsteleve with Count Rechberg, where he exchanged letters with Franz von Defregger . In 1902 his mother died, who within the family encouraged her son's artistic talent through recognition.

In 1904 the family took over a wine tavern in Überlingen , where Otto Keck was intensively involved in drawing and painting. He married Kreszensia Mauch, son Otto Paul was born. In 1906 they returned to Goßholz (now part of Lindenberg im Allgäu ) in the Allgäu and took over the "Golden Eagle". Since his wife took over the work in the inn, Keck was able to devote himself fully to painting and earn income from the sale of pictures. He received a visit from the famous painters Hans Best and ET Compton . In 1934, the city of Immenstadt gave him a piece of land as a gift and in 1935 a house, where he stayed until his death in 1948.

Lindenberg and Immenstadt have each named a street after Otto Keck.

Keck's work included portraits , anonymous Allgäu character heads, but also as commissioned work , such as the picture of the mayor of Kempten, Councilor Adolf Horchler , and other personalities. It was with them that he became best known. He created views of his Allgäu landscape. Flowers with objects were the content of still lifes . He condensed everyday situations in his genre pictures . He drew postcards for Weiler, Oberstdorf and others, created advertising images for companies, e.g. B. for hat manufacturing in Lindenberg and the dairy industry. The shooting targets are also part of his oeuvre.

“Otto Keck's art is not that of an innovator. It is mostly based on the widely appreciated style of realistically painting contemporaries. ... As a true autodidact, Otto Keck acquired his painterly qualities through literature on painting techniques and by copying reproductions. … Very often, however, a certain autodidact… has its special charm.
