Johann "Hans" Best (born August 25, 1874 in Mannheim ; † March 3, 1942 in Munich ) was a German landscape and genre painter who also worked as a sculptor, draftsman and illustrator.

Life

Best was the son of a master carpenter from Mannheim. On October 30, 1894, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich for the nature class with Karl Raupp . Even Wilhelm von Diez was one of his teachers.

After completing his studies, he traveled to Italy and spent a year in Trieste . He then opened a studio in Munich, became a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative and a member of the jury for its annual exhibitions. He made several trips through Italy, France and Belgium and taught as a professor of graphics at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich . Best owned a summer house near Fürstenfeldbruck and took the motifs of his genre pictures mainly from Bavarian country life. Many of his paintings, which often have a humorous touch, were widely used as postcard motifs. He produced a series of blackboard illustrations for Ernst Wasmuth Verlag . As a sculptor, he mainly worked as an animal trainer.

In 1913 he painted the lunettes in Auerbach's cellar in Leipzig .

Until the fire in 1931, he was almost regularly represented at the exhibitions in the Munich Glass Palace through the Munich Artists' Cooperative, most recently with the oil paintings Germany and Defamation and a bronze bust of Prof. Georg Fuchs . Hans Best was also present at the major German art exhibitions from 1937 to 1942, as evidenced by the catalogs.
