Life

Otto Kuske was the eldest of five sons of the innkeeper and community leader Hermann Kuske (1860–1924) and his wife Hulda, nee. Hoffmann (1856-1918). In 1909 he became a village school teacher in Simötzel in the Kolberg-Körlin district. After studying drawing at the Berlin Art School , he taught first at the Polzin Citizens' School and from 1912 at the Samter Agricultural School . In 1915 he came to the Friedrich Wilhelms School in Stettin . From 1915 to 1918 he was a soldier in Lithuania , where he fell ill with typhus .

Otto Kuske joined the Pomeranian Artists Association , in whose exhibitions he took part, resigned from school in 1936 and worked as a freelance painter. He set up a studio in Stettin-Ackermannshöhe. He made friends with Karl Rosenow , the founder of the District Home Museum at Rügenwalde Castle , and left him numerous pictures. In total, the Rügenwalde District Home Museum acquired around 35 pictures. In the years 1941 to 1944 he exhibited in the Kreisheimatmuseum: In 1941 a watercolor series of Pomeranian farmhouses, in 1942 Pomeranian forest and heathland landscapes and in 1943 30 watercolors and drawings about Pomeranian memorials to Bismarck. "His works speak of his love for the local landscape, which has made him a representative of local art , especially in recent years ".

At the end of the Second World War , most of Kuske's pictures in his Szczecin studio were destroyed. He came on the run to Eberswalde, where he was caught up with the Red Army and died under unknown circumstances.

Otto Kuske was married to Gertrud Lück (1890–1972). The daughter Hildtraut Winter published a book about her father in 2007.
