Otto Loth

Otto Loth (born March 6, 1844 in Meißen , † March 17, 1881 in Leipzig ) was a German Arabist and Orientalist . He was a professor and student of Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer .

Life

Otto Loth was born on March 6, 1844 in Meißen as the son of the Royal Saxon Councilor Dr. Loth and his wife Ottilie Loth (née Karg) were born. From 1857 he attended the prince school Sankt Afra (today Saxon State High School Sankt Afra ) in Meissen. From 1863 to 1866 he came to the University of Leipzig to study oriental philology . There he joined the Leipzig fraternity Dresdensia . In Leipzig he was considered a student of Professor Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer and Ludolf Krehl . On May 8, 1866, he received his doctorate in Leipzig on the basis of the dissertation “On the life and works of 'Abdallah ibn el Mu'tazz”.

In the summer of 1866 he went to Heidelberg and 1866/67 to Berlin to study Emil Roediger 's teachings. From 1870 to 1872 Loth studied Arabic manuscripts in England and then in Tabari, Constantinople and Egypt. Back in Saxony, he was promoted to professor at the University of Leipzig at Easter 1874.

In the years 1874-1880 Loth took over the editing of the magazine of the "Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft".

On March 17, 1881, he died in Leipzig after a two-day sick bed.
