Otto Paetsch (born August 7, 1878 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † September 14, 1927 in Kreckelmoos near Reutte ) was a German bookseller and publisher in Königsberg.

Life

As the son of a pharmacist from Rastenburg , Paetsch did an apprenticeship at the Gräfe und Unzer company from 1896 to 1899 . After serving as a one-year volunteer , he became a partner in 1901. He replaced the counter with freely accessible specialist departments “for selection and viewing”. The more than 200,000 books were clearly presented on shelves and frontally on book shelves and displays on the walls. There were reading tables with comfortable armchairs. After the purchase of the neighboring corner property, construction began on Paradeplatz in 1915 . The sales rooms were inaugurated in time for the company's 200th anniversary. "Such a well thought-out and comprehensive business plan was never implemented again in what was then the German Reich."

In 1910 he founded the Königsberg Booksellers Association, which he headed until his death. In 1925 he became consul of Austria . After 25 years of service, he became the sole owner in 1926. It was thanks to Paetsch that “Grunzer” became one of the largest retail bookshops in Europe.

At the Königsberg Kant celebration (1924) , Paetsch spoke at the Albertus University for the German Book Trade Association . On his behalf, he donated books worth 70,000 Reichsmarks to the Königsberg University Library .

In 1922 he set up a travel grant for established employees. For his 25th anniversary with the company, he donated a vacation home in Rauschen for the employees . Less than two weeks after his silver wedding anniversary, he died of a stroke in Tyrol at the age of 49 .
