Balduin Georg Otto Panzner (born July 9, 1853 Königstein ; † 1921 ) was a German sculptor in Dresden.

Live and act

The sculptor Panzner, who "remained relatively unknown to this day [1994], grew up in simple circumstances in a family of craftsmen from Königstein. With a one and a half year break at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he studied from 1870 to 1881 at the Royal Art Academy in Dresden in the studio of the sculptor Ernst Hähnel . After completing his studies, he set up his own studio in Dresden's Friedrichstrasse No. 22, in which, following the design characteristics of his teacher Hähnel, he created artistic works, especially in his preferred ancient, idealistic formal language. As a part-time job, he worked as a modeling teacher at the Dresden City Trade School.

Only a few pieces of Panzner's oeuvre have survived, such as the Gerlach Monument, inaugurated in 1890, an almost six meter high bronze statue of the veterinarian Andreas Christian Gerlach (1811–1877), on the premises of the Veterinary College in Berlin-Mitte ( Friedrich-Wilhelm-Stadt ) . Also two busts of the Saxon kings Johann and Georg from 1909 on the Königstein fortress . Another monument to King Albert of Saxony, unveiled on the Blitzeichen Plateau there in 1898 , is now considered lost. The relief of August the Strong , added in 1910 on the west side of the gatehouse, is also still preserved.

In Dresden he created a crucifix for each of the Catholic and Protestant parts of the garrison church of St. Martin , the putti allegories "Greek Antiquity" and "Middle Ages" on the facade of the art academy, and the pillar figures "Samuel" at the St. Mary's Church in Zwickau and "Joshua".
