Otto Pflugfelder

Otto Pflugfelder (born February 15, 1904 in the hamlet of Rappoltshofen, today a district of Obersontheim in the Schwäbisch Hall district ; † January 2, 1994 in Stuttgart ) was a German biologist and, in particular, zoologist ; from 1960 to 1962 he was rector of the Hohenheim Agricultural University .

Live and act

Growing up on his parents' farm, he studied natural sciences at the University of Tübingen and was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD. After working as an assistant in Tübingen and Jena , Pflugfelder completed his habilitation in zoology in 1935. He was appointed lecturer in 1939. In 1940 Otto Pflugfelder was drafted into military service. After a war wound with a thigh amputation, he returned to the University of Jena in 1945 and was appointed adjunct professor of zoology. In 1956 he accepted the position as professor and director of the Institute for Zoology at the Hohenheim Agricultural University, where he was rector from 1960–1962. He also represented zoology at the University of Stuttgart , which appointed him honorary professor.

From 1958 he was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and from 1983 of the New York Academy of Sciences . In 1972 he became an honorary member of the Society for Natural History in Württemberg and in 1974 an honorary member of the German Society for Parasitology .

Research priorities

Otto Pflugfelder conducted research on the development history of insects and, in the field of physiology, in particular on the function of endocrine glands.
