Otto René Castillo

Otto René Castillo (born April 25, 1934 in Quetzaltenango , Guatemala , † March 19, 1967 in Guatemala) was an important Guatemalan poet , literary scholar and guerrilla fighter.

Life

Otto René Castillo was born in Quetzaltenango , in western Guatemala, in 1934 . Since 1954 he was in exile in El Salvador . He first began studying law , but was then able to study literature in Leipzig from 1959 to 1962 on a scholarship . Otto René Castillo was also a filmmaker and was a member of the jury of the International Leipzig Documentary and Short Film Festival in 1961/62. In 1966 he returned to Guatemala and became a member of the guerrilla Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias .

Castillo is the winner of various Spanish and Latin American literary prizes.

On March 19, 1967, he was arrested, tortured and burned alive.

The "Castillo Theater" in New York City is named after him. In New York, the "Otto René Castillo Awards for Political Theater" have been given annually to theater groups and individual artists since 1998.
