Otto Rub

Otto Rub (born March 29, 1856 in Mannheim ; died April 12, 1942 in Thomasberg (Lower Austria) ) was a German actor and historian . From 1900 he was part of the ensemble of the Vienna Burgtheater .

life and work

Rub was trained by the Mannheim court actor Guido Herzfeld and made his debut at the Darmstadt Court Theater in 1875 . He played in the field of " youthful hero " at various German theaters. On the stages in Metz, Erfurt and Weimar he made the transition to character and also began to work as a director . In 1899 he was engaged as a director at the Jantsch Theater in Vienna's Prater and remained in Austria from then on.

His children Marianne Rub (1883–?) And Christian Rub (1886–1956) were used as child actors, the son went to the United States by 1919 at the latest, where he played mostly small roles in around 120 films. In 1900 Rub was signed to the Burgtheater , where he performed until 1932. His roles at the castle included Schiller's Don Karlos and Max Piccolomini in his Wallenstein . He was also active as a writer and published two volumes: On dramatic art in Danzig in the period from 1615 to 1893, and on the Burgtheater's repertoire from 1776 to 1913.

His letter estate includes correspondence with 577 scribes, including in particular with Auguste Wilbrandt-Baudius and Margarete Königswarter . It is located in the Austrian National Library .
