Otto Schaufelberger

Otto Schaufelberger (born January 21, 1901 in Rüti ZH ; † March 21, 1987 in Bottighofen ) was a Swiss teacher , writer and "folk poet" from the Zurich Oberland , who a. a. wrote many works in the local dialect.

Life

Schaufelberger grew up in a working-class family in Rüti and Wald ZH , attended the teachers' seminar in Küsnacht and taught at various locations in the Zurich Oberland. Most of the time he lived in Uster , which named a place after him in 1995. His daughter is the writer Magdalena Munz-Schaufelberger (* 1926). His son is the graphic artist and designer Peter Schaufelberger-Henry (* 1935).

People at the Schnebelhorn

Schaufelberger taught from July 20, 1920 to October 31, 1923 at the eight-class comprehensive school in the village of Strahlegg am Schnebelhorn in the Fischenthal community , first as vicar, then as administrator and elected teacher. He describes his experiences in the work Menschen am Schnebelhorn in the form of a diary, condensed into a year. The book became one of the most widely read homeland books in Switzerland.

The brown surf

The brown surf (subtitle: A Swiss Decade Experience ) is an anti-fascist novel by Schaufelberger, which was published in 1945 by the Davos-Clavadel Cooperative Höhensonne Verlag . It tells of the complicated and fragile friendship of two old schoolmates against the background of Swiss frontism , the political current in Switzerland that was looking to join the Third Reich .

In his foreword, Schaufelberger writes:

“Should the author be accused of having the courage too late to oppose Hitler's spirit and frontism, then that cannot affect him because he had spoken and spoken long before the war and also in the 'most dangerous years' Scripture has worked incessantly for democracy and against the demons from north and south. "
