Otto Schumann (born November 5, 1888 in Magdeburg - Buckau ; † May 3, 1945 in Neustädter Bucht ) was a German politician ( SPD ), trade unionist and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Schumann joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1907. From 1908 he worked as a moulder at Blohm & Voss . During World War I he served as a soldier on the Western Front . After the end of the war he became a functionary of the union of formers and foundry workers and in 1924 a founding member of the Reich Banner . He was the district leader of the SPD in Hamburg-Neustadt . From 1926 Schumann worked as an employment agency in Hamburg and later at the regional employment office in Nordmark. From 1931 to 1933 Schumann was a member of the Hamburg parliament .

In June 1933 he was released without notice. Schumann was a member of the illegal party leadership around Walter Schmedemann . In January 1934 he took over a laundry in Hamburg and, with the help of his delivery contacts, was able to camouflage the structure of the SPD's illegal resistance work. In November 1934 he was arrested and sentenced by the Hamburg Higher Regional Court to a prison term of one year and nine months for “preparation for high treason ”. After serving his sentence, however, Schumann remained in so-called “ protective custody ” for a few months .

As part of the " Operation Grid " he was arrested again on August 23, 1944 and taken to the Neuengamme concentration camp . At the end of April 1945, the concentration camp was cleared and Schumann was one of the thousands of prisoners who had to go on the death march to the Bay of Lübeck and were brought there on ships. After the bombing of the Cap Arcona , Schumann drowned on May 3, 1945 in the Bay of Lübeck when the ship went down.
