Otto Zardetti
Johann Joseph Friedrich Otto Zardetti (born January 24, 1847 in Rorschach , † May 9, 1902 in Rome ) was a Swiss theologian and archbishop .
Life
Otto Zardetti was ordained a priest on August 21, 1870 . From 1876 to 1881 he was the resident canon of the diocese of St. Gallen . On October 3, 1889, he was appointed Bishop of Saint Cloud . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Oregon City , William Hickley Gross CSsR , on October 20 of the same year; Co-consecrators were the bishop of St. Gallen , Augustin Egger , and the bishop of Basel and Lugano , Leonhard Haas .
On March 6, 1894, Zardetti was appointed Archbishop of Bucharest, but renounced the archbishopric with effect from May 25, 1895. Finally in 1895 he became titular archbishop of Mocissus and papal assistant to the throne . In 1895, a children's home in Little Falls was named St. Otto Orphan Asylum in honor of Zardetti .
Lilly Braumann-Honsell , a relative of Zardetti, describes "Uncle Otto" as the "image of a noble clergyman, a prince of the church [...] without any anointing and without any display of dignity" and as a "man of the world, elegant, agile, full of humor and tolerance, which was perhaps only apparent, but was pleasant in traffic ».
Archbishop Zardetti was buried on Pentecost Tuesday 1902 in the abbot's vault of Mehrerau Abbey.
