Otto Zellweger

Otto Zellweger (born February 5, 1858 in Paris ; † March 15, 1933 in Basel ; legal resident in Trogen) was a Swiss theologian , pastor , publicist and editor from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Otto Zellweger was a son of Ulrich Zellweger and Cécile Ryhiner. In 1883 he married Lily Steiger . He was the brother-in-law of Ernst Steiger-Züst and Jakob Züst. He studied theology in Basel and Leipzig from 1876 to 1881 . From 1881 to 1886 he was pastor in Reute . From 1886 to 1894 he was pastor of the Protestant-positive minority community in Heiden , which is why he was excluded from the Appenzell synod . From 1884 to 1931 he was editor-in-chief of the Appenzeller Sunday newspaper and from 1894 to 1902 of the Allgemeine Schweizer Zeitung . From 1902 to 1924 he was head of the Basler Nachrichten as a delegate to the board of directors of the book printing company to Baslerberichthaus AG and served on the board of directors of the Swiss dispatch agency . From 1897 to 1914 he was a member of the Basel Grand Council . In 1902, Zellweger initiated the acquisition of Basler Nachrichten and its merger with the Allgemeine Schweizer Zeitung . Under his leadership, the Basler Nachrichten developed into a respected liberal-conservative Swiss daily. Zellweger was a follower of Christoph Blumhardt and continued to work regularly as a guest preacher after 1894.
