Otto von Guggenberg zu Riedhofen (born April 30, 1848 in Brixen ; † January 10, 1914 there ) was a Tyrolean politician and doctor.

biography

The son of a district doctor studied medicine at the University of Vienna . In 1873 von Guggenberg obtained his doctorate . After clinical training in Vienna and Berlin , he served as a regimental doctor with the Tyrolean riflemen , practiced in Bodenbach on the Elbe and worked as a spa doctor in Bohemia . He then returned to Tyrol, where he initially worked in Meran and Brennerbad . In 1890, following the example of Sebastian Kneipp , he founded a hydropathic institute in Brixen, with which he was able to attract a considerable number of spa guests to his home town and give tourism an early boom.

In addition to his professional activity as a doctor, von Guggenberg, one of the co-founders of the Christian Social Party in Tyrol, was also politically active. In 1894 he was elected to the Brixen municipal council for the first time. From 1904 to 1913 he was mayor of the city. He was also a member of the Tyrolean Parliament and President of the Tyrolean Culture Council.

Von Guggenberg was married to Bertha Stark (1854–1931). Their fourth son, Otto von Guggenberg , became a politician like his father.
