Ottomar Borwitzky (cellist)

Ottomar Borwitzky (born October 6, 1930 in Hamburg ; † March 29, 2021 ) was a German cellist and music teacher .

life and work

Ottomar Borwitzky was the son of the first concertmaster of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra , Ottomar Borwitzky . His mother was also a professional violinist. He studied with Bernhard Günther , Arthur Troester and Paul Grümmer . Before graduating from high school, he left high school to become first cellist with the Hamburg Radio Orchestra . In 1954 he moved to the Hanover Opera House in the same position . In 1956 he became principal cellist with the Berliner Philharmoniker and then worked in this orchestra for 37 years until 1993. In 1972 he founded Die 12 Cellisten with fellow orchestra members as an independent ensemble.

From 1979 Borwitzky worked as a cello teacher at the Karajan Academy . The Berliner Philharmoniker will particularly remember his interpretations of Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto and Richard Strauss ʼ Don Quixote .

Ottomar Borwitzky died on March 29, 2021 after a long illness at the age of 90.
