Clarinda is a city in Iowa . It is the county seat of Page County . The number of inhabitants was 5,366 in 2019.
story
Clarinda was incorporated in 1851 and became a parish on December 8, 1866. The town is named for Clarinda Buck, who, according to legend, carried water to the surveyors when Page County was first surveyed.
In 1943, during the Second World War , an internment camp for 3,000 prisoners of war with 60 barracks and a 150-bed hospital was set up in Clarinda. German prisoners were the first to arrive at Camp Clarinda, followed by Italian and Japanese prisoners of war in 1945.
Demographics
According to an estimate from 2019, there are 5,366 people in Clarinda. The population is divided into 88.3% White , 4.3% African American, 1.2% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.4% Oceanian, and 3.1% with two or more ethnicities. Hispanics or Latinos of all races made up 3.9% of the population. The median household income was $ 50,013 and the poverty rate was 10.6%.

Clarinda is on US Highway 71 and Iowa Highway 2 . In the past, both highways ran through the city center, but now there is a bypass road that runs both highways to the south and east of Clarinda itself. In the past, the settlement had a railway connection, but it no longer exists today.
