Ottomar Meykow
Ottomar Johann Friedrich Meykow (born January 7 . Jul / 19th January 1823 greg. In Tartu , Governorate of Livonia ; † February 5 jul. / 17th February 1894 greg. ) Was a Baltic German lawyer.
Life and science
Ottomar Meykow attended grammar school in his Livonian hometown of Tartu (German Dorpat ) from 1834 to 1841 . From 1842 to 1846 he studied law at the Imperial University of Dorpat . In 1843 he received the gold medal. In 1847 he received his master's degree with his thesis De duplae stipulationis computatione . In 1850 he published his doctoral thesis on Dr. iur. under the title The Diction of the Roman Bride Gift. A legal historical treatise.
From 1847 to 1855 Meykow was employed as a civil servant in the Russian Ministry of Justice (1847-1852) and in the Senate (1852-1855) in Saint Petersburg . He then embarked on an academic career.
From 1855 to 1865 Meykow was an associate professor of Roman law at the University of Kazan . From 1865 until his retirement due to illness in 1892, he was a full professor of law at the University of Tartu.
Meykow made a name for himself as an expert in Roman law , German private law and Baltic provincial law . From 1860 to 1864 he played a decisive role in the preparations for the codification of the Baltic provincial law.
From 1872 to 1876 Meykow was Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Tartu. From 1879 to 1881 and again from 1890 to 1892 he was rector of the university. Meykow resigned from office in protest against the Russification efforts in the Baltic States .
