The Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral in San Bernardino in San Bernardino County in California , United States , is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino . She bears the patronage of Our Lady of the Rosary .

history

The Holy Rosary Ward was organized by John Joseph Cantwell , Archbishop of Los Angeles , on October 7, 1927, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary . The services originally took place in a tenement house before the construction of a separate church building began in May 1928, the current cathedral of the diocese. The church was completed in September of that year. Archbishop Cantwell consecrated the church on the Rosary Festival in 1928.

A school opened in January 1947, run by Dominican sisters from Houston , Texas . A new monastery was built in 1950, and the church itself was renovated and enlarged in 1953. A new school building was also built.

Phillip Francis Straling was pastor of Holy Rosary Church from April 1976 before he was appointed first bishop of the newly formed diocese of San Bernardino in 1978 . The church was elevated to a cathedral and was given its current name, Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral . In spring 1997 it was renovated again.
