Over the Hump (dt. About the Corner [be] ) is the eighth studio album by the group The Kelly Family . It became a great commercial success and led to the band's breakthrough in German-speaking countries.

Emergence

In 1993 the Kelly Family had already released an album with WOW , which for the first time exclusively contained their own compositions. In addition to street concerts, they increasingly gave indoor concerts, including four sold-out concerts in the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle in Hamburg and in May 1994 a concert in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund . Between the concerts they recorded their album Over the Hump at Sound Studio N in Cologne . This again contained only self-written songs. The album was released on August 26, 1994 by Kel-Life and in the same year by edel records . This allowed the Kelly Family to offer their album on a regular basis and not to sell it on the street as before. Another version appeared in October 1995, this time distributed by EMI . Even before the album was released, the singles An Angel and Why Why Why had come out; other singles were the song Roses of Red written by Maite Kelly and First Time .

In Germany, Over the Hump was able to stay in the charts for 112 weeks from September 19, 1994 (with interruptions until November 1996), with the album being in the top 10 for 53 weeks and at the highest position for four weeks. With around 2.5 million copies sold (certified with nine gold for over 2.25 million units sold), Over the Hump is one of the best-selling music albums in Germany . In Austria (double platinum in January 1996) and Switzerland the album stayed in the charts for over 60 weeks. Over the Hump has sold over four million times across Europe .

In 1996, the video Over the Hump was released with all the tracks on the album as a music video or live.

criticism

In its annual music review, the Saarbrücker Zeitung stated at the end of 1994: "Unexpected also the great success of the Kelly Family with the CD 'Over The Hump'".

“Musically, they only showed years later that they can also do 'differently' (even if the second single, 'Why Why Why' was deliberately designed to be a bit more 'catchy')”, stated cd-lexikon.de: “'Over The Hump 'contained quite a few songs on the verge of kitsch - or even beyond. 'Santa Maria' is a prime example - a song that you can't always endure ... "

In terms of sales, Die Zeit listed the album among the 17 greatest albums of all time in 2009 and number 1 among albums sold in Germany.
