Owen Günther
Owen Günther (also Ovenus Günther ; born January 25, 1532 in Eiderstedt , † July 8, 1615 in Helmstedt ) was a German philosopher.
Life
Günther was the son of the farmer and parish bailiff Oven Gunnens. He attended the learned school of the Johanneum in Hamburg and the Martino-Katharineum Braunschweig . On July 12, 1553, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , where he, as an enthusiastic supporter of Philipp Melanchthon , acquired the degree of master's degree on February 16, 1557 and was accepted as a teacher in the philosophical faculty on January 18, 1561. During his time in Wittenberg, he made educational trips that took him to Prague, Austria, Hungary, Transylvania and Poland. On March 19, 1566 he was at the University of Rostockaccepted into the philosophy faculty, where he read on Melanchthon's ethics. On November 16, 1568 he became professor of ethics there and in the winter semester of 1569 he was the dean of the philosophical faculty.
In 1570 he went to the University of Jena as Professor of Logic and from there on February 20, 1575 as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Helmstedt . Günther was a recognized philosopher of Aristotle in his day , the results of which he regarded as absolute truth and who placed great emphasis on physics. In Hofmann's dispute he was a representative of the humanistic direction, which tried to mediate. In Helmstedt he was elected prorector of Juliana in 1580/81, 1595/95 and 1606/07. He has the Dean's office of the philosophical faculty twelve times, in the years 1576/77, 1579, 1583, 1585/86, 1588, 1591, 1593/94, 1597/98, 1601/02, 1605/06, 1610 and 1613/14 , held.
Günther had a relationship with Sibylle Dietrichs († 1611), the daughter of kurf, around 1573. Saxon court master Bonaventura Dietrichs, married. There are six children from the marriage, of which only one son and daughter survived the father. The son Friedrich Günther (~ March 22, 1581 in Helmstedt) became the advice of Duchess Elisabeth and took over higher positions in Denmark. The daughter Elisabeth Ursula Günther (~ March 19, 1585 in Helmstedt) married on September 3, 1610 with the Magdeburg patrician Johann Eding.
