Daniel Hofmann (theologian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Hofmann or Hoffmann (* around 1538 in Halle (Saale) ; † November 30, 1611 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German Lutheran theologian , philosopher and university professor .

Life

Training and first years in Helmstedt

Hofmann was born the son of a stonemason and citizen Christoph Hofmann in Halle an der Saale and grew up there. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Jena . In Jena he obtained his master's degree in philosophy on July 4, 1570 and was accepted as a teacher in the philosophy faculty in the winter semester of 1571.

In 1574 he was appointed to the pedagogy in Gandersheim as a teacher for ethics and physics . In the course of the founding of the University of Helmstedt by Duke Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , he was appointed professor of ethics and dialectics at the philosophy faculty at this university in 1576 . In 1578 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. and his move as a full professor of theology to the theological faculty. During this time he practiced theology as a philosopher.

Hofmann, who was also superintendent of Helmstedt, stood by Duke Julius and defended the tonsure of Prince Heinrich Julius on November 27, 1578 by the Benedictine abbot von Huysburg and his catholic liturgical introduction to the bishopric of Halberstadt on December 7, 1578 (see inauguration Heinrich Julius' von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel as Prince-Bishop of Halberstadt ). His commitment in this regard led to his being appointed consistorial councilor.

Hofmann quarrel and dismissal

This relationship with the duke changed at the end of the 16th century. After the duke called the scholars Johannes Caselius and Cornelius Martini to Helmstedt, Hofmann had to defend his doctrine. Hofmann advocated Luther's separation of philosophy and theology, as a result of which there could be two truths, a philosophical and a theological one. From 1597 onwards, the Ramism represented by Hofmann was no longer to be taught, which led to the so-called Hofmann dispute in 1598 .

Hofmann continued to support Ramism and had his students defend these positions. The dispute escalated to such an extent that in 1598 the theological faculty charged Hofmann with the duke. The negotiations about it dragged on until 1601 and finally led to Hofmann's dismissal. From 1603 he was again in Helmstedt, but then finally retired to Wolfenbüttel to live with his sister.

family

Hofmann married Marie Musaeus, daughter of the superintendent Simon Musaeus , on May 30, 1577 . There are four sons and two daughters from the marriage. From the children we know:

  1. To. Eva Hofmann ⚭ I Heinrich Julius Everdes, ⚭ II Jacob Steinberg
  2. So. Daniel Hofmann
  3. So. Heinrich Hofmann
