The Pötschenstein is 1359  m above sea level. A. high summit of the Sandling massif on the western edge of the Dead Mountains on the border between Styria and Upper Austria in the Salzkammergut .

Location and landscape

The mountain rises northwest of Altaussee , above Ramsau and the Blaa-Alm . It is a north-western pre-summit of the Hohe Sandling  ( 1717  m above sea level ). It is separated from the actual Sandlingstock by the Sandlingbach (Kaslbach) - Ausseer Sandlingalm - Hinterer Sandlinggraben line. North bordering Fludergrabenbach for higher Stein  ( 1388  m above sea level. A. ), who by the saddle during Pitzingmoos is connected.

The summit massif breaks into rock faces on both sides, south and north.

geology

The summit belongs to the zone of massive light limestone surrounding the Sandling summit massif in a wreath shape , which is dated to the lower norium about 225 million years ago. Its foundation are all-history layers of the Lower Jurassic (200–180 million years old). The light lime is interpreted as a relocated Hallstatt ceiling . At the saddle of the Sandlingalm is the Haselgebirge from the Altaussee salt mountain complex .

History, development and nature

The name Pötschen probably comes from the Slavic pečina '[overhanging] rock face, cave', a word that has the same meaning as German oven . The word can also be found at the more well-known Pötschenpass on the Sandling southern flank.

The summit is rarely climbed; there is only an unmarked path from the Sandlingalm to it. But it offers a good view of the Ausseerland. The Northern Alpine Trail (long-distance hiking trail 01) passes from the Blaaalm to the Sandlingalm to the southeast below.

The mountain is part of the extensive Salzkammergut landscape conservation area  (LSG 14b).
