PALAOA ( P erenni AL A coustic O bservatory in the A ntarctic Ocean , dt. Year-round acoustic observatory in the Antarctic Ocean , also hawaiian for whale tooth ivory ) is the name of a since 2006 by the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar - and marine research (AWI) in Bremerhaven in the Antarctic on the Ekström Ice Shelf operated research station , around 25 kilometers north of the German Neumayer station . Here, around the clock by underwater microphones or hydrophones and sensors floating, which thick through holes at 100 meters the ice sheet were positioned, acoustic signals from the underwater world of the Weddell Sea recorded.

Trivia

The AWI Oceanic Acoustics working group supported the production of the radio play In darkness let me dwell - songs from the darkness by the duo Merzouga (“ Radio Play of the Month ” December 2016). It deals with the departure of the AWI research ship Polarstern in 2016 in the Antarctic on the centenary of Ernest Shackleton's failed endurance expedition and links the two events.
