The history of PFW Aerospace goes back to the Pfalz-Flugzeugwerke , which was merged into the United Flight Technical Works , MBB and finally Airbus through a series of takeovers from 1964 . When the Daimler-Benz Aerospace / Airbus plant in Speyer was to be sold or closed as part of the “Dolores” program in 1997, it was taken over independently by the 527 employees under the traditional name Pfalz-Flugzeugwerke GmbH (PFW) . In 2001, the employees sold the company to the American financial investor Safeguard International Fund . In 2006 the company renamed PFW Aerospace AG . Out of tradition, the company's trainees built a Pfalz D.III , which has been on display in the Technik Museum Speyer since 2009 .

In 2006 PFW took over the company Specitubes in France, previously its main supplier for steel and titanium tubes, which continues to produce at the two locations in Nanterre and Samer for its own use, but also for a large number of international aviation customers. In 2008, PFW founded another production site in Xi'an (China) for the manufacture of small components.

In 2011, the majority of PFW (after the sale in 1997) was taken over by Airbus with 74.9% of the shares. According to matching media reports, Airbus is currently looking for a buyer for PFW Aerospace (as of 2018).
