The PSS ( Russian ПСС : Пистолет Специальный Самозарядный , Pistolet Spezialni Samosarjadni , in German: Self-loading special pistol ) is a silenced Soviet handgun.
technology
The loud bang when firing a firearm is caused by the ignition of the propellant charge and the suddenly released gases. In addition to this loud noise, there is the bang of the bullet when it reaches supersonic speed . The muzzle velocity of the ammunition used here is much lower than that of sound, which means that a sound source is eliminated. In contrast to conventional pistols, which use standard ammunition, there is no need to mount a separate silencer in front of the muzzle in order to mitigate the explosive expansion of the gases. The pistol fires special ammunition of the type SP-4 , in which the resulting gases do not even leave the case. Between the projectile and the propellant there is a piston-like seal that pushes the projectile out. The seal then remains in the sleeve and seals it completely. The ejected case is therefore under high pressure. There is no muzzle flash ; the noise development is comparatively low and, according to the developer, corresponds to that of an air rifle. Conversely, the barrel must be quite short, as powder gases can no longer exert pressure from behind.
The mechanism of the weapon is also unusual: when the weapon is fired, not only is the bolt thrown back, but also the chamber . Usually the rifled part of the barrel and the chamber are a single component, but here they are separate. With the bearing, a little more mass is in motion in order to reload reliably. In addition, the bearing has its own closing spring and is decelerated separately from the slide . So when the slide hits its rear stop, the resulting noise is somewhat reduced.
Development and use
The PSS was created to replace the PB pistol, a silenced variant of the Makarov in the Soviet standard 9 × 18 mm caliber , the silencer of which doubled the overall length of the weapon. Other predecessor models with special ammunition such as the MSP were compact and quiet enough, but were only two-shot and did not have interchangeable magazines. With the PSS, however, special forces now had a weapon that was both silent and multi-shot. First used in 1983 by the Spetsnaz , it is also used by units of the FSB and the MWD for covert operations and reconnaissance missions.
advantages
- compact design, easy to carry concealed
- no bulky silencer necessary
- no telltale muzzle flash
- weak recoil
disadvantage
- complex production, expensive ammunition
- low projectile energy and range
- common standard ammunition cannot be used
