Paško Rakić

Paško Rakić (* 1933 in Ruma , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ) is a Yugoslav -American neuroscientist at Yale University .

Life

Rakic ​​first studied medicine at the University of Belgrade and began his career as a neurosurgeon at the University Hospital in Belgrade in the early 1960s. He began his research in 1962 as a fellow at Harvard Medical School . From 1967 to 1969 he worked as an assistant professor for developmental biology and genetics in Belgrade. In 1969 he returned to Harvard Medical School as an assistant professor of neuropathology and became an associate professor there in 1972 . In 1978 he moved to the Yale University School of Medicine as a full professor.

Prizes and awards

Rakic ​​was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences ; he is also on the board of the Society for Neuroscience . Together with Thomas Jessell and Sten Grillner , he won the 2008 Kavli Prize for Neuroscience.

Rakic ​​was awarded the $ 50,000 15th annual Bristol-Myers Squibb Prize for Excellence in Neuroscience. In 2000 he received the Pasarow Award , and in 2002, together with his wife Patricia Goldman-Rakic, the Ralph W. Gerard Prize .

The Norwegian Academy of Sciences elected him a member.

In 1990 the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts made him a corresponding member. In 1992 he received the International Prize of the Fyssen Foundation. He has been an external member of the Academia Europaea since 2014 . In 2016 he was elected an external member of the Royal Society .

Private

He was married to the neuroscientist Patricia Goldman-Rakic , who died on July 31, 2003.
