Pachyphytum compactum is a type of plant from the genus Pachyphytum in the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

description

Pachyphytum compactum is an evergreen , perennial , succulent plant. It is very attractive with its unmistakably patterned, thick, frosted leaves, which have a dull green color and are sometimes tinged with purple. The pattern of the leaves results from the imprint of neighboring leaves and distinguishes Pachyphytum compactum from all other species of the genus. The plant often branches at the bottom and is up to 40 cm long when hanging.

The inflorescence stems are formed in leaf axils and take about eight weeks from appearance to the opening of the first flower. The radial symmetry , five-fold flowers are reddish with dark tips; like many flowers pollinated by hummingbirds, they hang downward and appear between February and July.

The number of chromosomes is n = 31 + 8B.

distribution

Pachyphytum compactum occurs naturally in the Mexican states of Hidalgo and Querétaro , on shady cliffs at altitudes of about 2000 meters. HW Fittkau reported in 1963 about a site on Cerro Mexicano , northwest of Colón , Querétaro. This is also the only place known to date where two types of Pachyphytum grow side by side, namely Pachyphytum compactum and Pachyphytum viride . A hybrid plant of both species also appeared there.

use

Pachyphytum compactum first appeared in culture in the USA. Due to its robustness, it is enjoying increasing popularity as an ornamental plant .

Systematics

The first description by Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1911, based on a Washington flowering plant collected by Carl Albert Purpus in Ixmiquilpan , Hidalgo. In 1991, Reid Venable Moran published an extensive article. Charles H. Uhl reports a base chromosome number of n = 31.
