Paciano Rizal

Paciano Rizal (full name: Paciano Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda ; * March 7, 1851 , † April 13, 1930 ) was a Filipino general and revolutionary. He is the older brother of José Rizal , the national hero of the Philippines.

Paciano was the second of eleven children of a wealthy family in Calamba , Laguna , and grew up witnessing the abuse of clergy and Spanish colonizers. His close friend, Jose Burgos, was involved in the Cavite uprising of 1872 and was executed. That was one of the motivations for Rizal to join the resistance movement. Paciano Rizal joined the campaign of Marcelo H. del Pilar and his newspaper Diariong Tagalog and actively supported them. He also helped spread the Katipunan independence movement in Laguna. In January 1897, after his brother's execution, he joined the revolution under General Emilio Aguinaldo . He was appointed Brigadier General of the Revolutionary Force and was elected Minister of Finance for the Central Luzon Department . During the American-Philippine War (1899-1913) he commanded the Philippine armed forces near Luzon. US troops captured him in 1900. He was released a short time later and settled in the town of Calumpit, Bulacan. He lived a quiet life as a hobby farmer and had six children with his second wife. Rizal died of tuberculosis at the age of 79.

Among the offspring are Orly Mercado, Senator, and Conchita Mercado Basa Danganan. According to the locals, the family had Mercado their annual family reunion at Conchita's Birthday, February 23, until her death in 2003. Conchita is the mother of Joel B. Danganan, which the JED's Resort (largest resort of Bulacan owned) and Honorio Basa Danganan who is a local celebrity in Baguio City .
