Ernst Bieri (born March 18, 1920 in Zurich ; † November 21, 2003 ibid) was a Swiss politician , banker and publicist .

Life

After Ernst Bieri 1946, the theological faculty of the University of Zurich with the promotion to doctor had finished, he worked until 1966 as an editor at the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . In this capacity he openly called for actions against the homes of Swiss communists after the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956 . In addition, he was now active as an author of primarily Christian-political literature. After completing his studies, he became involved as a politician for the first time. In the post-war period he joined the Free Democratic Party , where he subsequently held many different offices. After he was finally elected to the Zurich city council in 1966 , he gave up his position as editor. As a city councilor, he was responsible for the finances of Zurich. In 1967 he was also elected to the Swiss National Council. He remained on the city council until 1970 and on the national council until 1971.

After Bank Julius Baer was doing better and better in the 1960s and the bank forged big plans, the Baer family decided to hire an outsider at their bank for the second time, after Hans Mayenfisch had already been a member of the bank from 1913 to 1947 . On July 4, 1970, Bieri was hired as a managing partner by the shareholders' meeting of Bank Julius Baer. Bieri took up his position at the bank on January 1, 1971. He then headed the office of President of the Building Commission at the bank. Under his direction, numerous renovations and new constructions of Bank Julius Baer's buildings, such as new buildings behind Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse , were carried out. In addition, during his term of office, the bank was converted from a limited partnership to a stock corporation .

Furthermore, since he was at Bank Julius Baer, ​​Bieri has increasingly returned to work as an author. In his works, he primarily examined Switzerland, its politics and economy, in some cases also from a civic point of view. Bieri finally retired on January 1, 1984. Nevertheless, he was a member of the Board of Directors and the Board Committee of Bank Julius Baer until mid-March 1990 . In addition, during this time he was often a participant in meetings of the family shareholders of the Bär family. Ernst Bieri died in 2003.
