Paganini is a German silent film drama directed in 1922 by Heinz Goldberg . Conrad Veidt played the title role .

action

The music world is shaken: Paganini has died! But during the funeral ceremony, the (pseudo) dead awakens to new life. The devil violinist begins to turn his life inside out, leaves his wife and starts a liaison with a duchess. Paganini then challenges her husband to a sword duel, but falls into the blade of his own fencing weapon and dies. Paganini is accused of murder and thrown into dungeon.

When he is freed from the dungeon with the help of the Duchess, it is the same who lets him shoot when she realizes that the Italian has long since reoriented and has now chosen a simple girl from the people. The shot does not hit the faithless Paganini, but the innocent Giulietta. The pain of this loss ultimately leads Paganini to die during an applause concert.

Production notes

Paganini was shot in mid-1922, passed film censorship on January 20, 1923, and premiered on March 31, 1923 in Berlin's Tauentzienpalast . The five-act film was 1832 meters long and was banned from young people. In Austria, the strip started on November 2, 1923. The version there measured six acts over a length of around 2060 meters.

Robert Neppach designed the film structures. For Greta Schröder this was the last silent film role, Gustav Fröhlich , who embodies Franz Liszt, made his German film debut. Theater director Heinz Goldberg also made his film debut here.

criticism

In Paimann's film lists it can be read: “The subject is in places strongly tailored to the fantastic, nonetheless, it is worked through and through in a gripping manner, supported by a virtuoso depiction, in places almost grotesque. The presentation and photos are kept at a remarkable height. "
