action

Europe in 1709: Russia and Sweden are at war. At the court of Louis XIV, the company has fun with games and dancing. The courtiers Charles de Brese and the Count de la Bush clash because of a flirtation between de Breses and the court lady Charlotte de Monterras, who is very close to the king. It comes to a duel that ends bloody. Louis XIV finds out about this and, out of annoyance, decides to send both of them abroad as war observers. De Brese is supposed to send a dispatch to the Tsar, de la Bush is supposed to send a message of the same wording to the King of Sweden Charles XII. bring.

On the way through Poland, de Brese meets Grigori Voronov, a bodyguard of the Tsar. He is looking for a mysterious black rider who regularly kills the tsar's scouts and couriers in the woods. When de Brese is attacked by Polish robbers, Voronov rushes to his aid. Conversely, de Brese did not hesitate for a moment to save the Russian when he fell into the hands of the Swedes. Together, the two try to spy on the Swedes and get through to Peter's camp. Around the same time, Count de la Bush arrives at the Swedes. De Brese and the Count meet for the first time, and the Count escapes, but falls hard from his horse. The black rider finds him and turns out to be the Polish noblewoman Anka, who wants to kill the tsar in order to avenge the death of her family. De la Bush has to realize that one of the two dispatches he carries with him contains Ludwig's order for Karl to let the French die on the front line. De Brese also carries this task with him without his own knowledge, but the news is stolen from him by the Polish resistance.

In the meantime, festivals and intrigues are still being celebrated at the French court. However, Charlotte de Monterras learns of the king's diabolical plan and also sets off for Russia to find de Brese, whom she loves. However, the two French couriers got caught in the maelstrom of fighting between Russians and Swedes. They face each other in the Battle of Poltava. The Russian army wins the battle and Count de la Bush falls into the hands of the Tsar. In the meantime, he has also allowed Voronov and de Brese to come to him. The tsar had just barely escaped an assassination attempt by the Polish noblewoman and her brother. They carried the stolen message from de Brese with them, which made the French suspicious in the eyes of the Tsar.

De Brese puts his fate in the hands of the tsar, but asks him to be able to settle accounts with de la Bush beforehand. Then events roll over: Anka from Poland has sneaked into the camp again and is aiming a pistol at Peter. Voronov throws himself in between and dies from the bullet. Before taking his last breath, he asks de Brese to take care of his two children, who are now orphans. Anka is immediately hung on the gallows, and the two French begin their duel with great severity. De Brese loses. Shortly afterwards, Charlotte de Monterras arrives at the Russian border. A carriage with de la Bush comes towards her. Surprisingly, de Brese also sits in it, injured but alive. The count lets them go, even though an envoy from the French king is already on their necks. De Monterras and de Brese escape across the sea with Voronov's children.
