Palacio de Ferro

history

The Iron Palace was classified by the French Embassy in Luanda as the work of Gustave Eiffel, the builder of the Eiffel Tower and the New York Statue of Liberty . It is believed that it was built for an exhibition in Paris in the 1880s / 1890s and then shipped to Luanda. Since there are no records of its origin, the exact origin remains uncertain. There is evidence that he was en route to Madagascar , but the ship had to call at Luanda because of violent storms. It was bought by the Companhia Comercial de Angola in Luanda around 1900 . During the colonial period the palace was used as an arts center, after Angola's independence and during the civil war it fell into disrepair and was inhabited by the homeless. Its restoration began in 2009, financed by the diamond company Endiama and carried out by the Brazilian company Odebrecht . The original parts were preserved as far as possible, as the building is classified as a national cultural heritage. It was initially planned to convert it into a diamond museum. In 2015, a special protection zone was created by decree within a radius of 10 meters around the building. On January 16, 2016, it was officially reopened by the Governor of Luanda Province , Francisco Higino Carneiro . In September 2019, the Minister of Culture Maria da Piedade de Jesus announced that the property would be made accessible to a wider public and converted into a cultural center.
