The Palais Porcia is a palace in Herrengasse in the 1st district of Vienna , next to the Palais Kinsky and opposite the Palais Harrach . It is one of the few palace buildings in Vienna that was built under the influence of the Renaissance and is one of the oldest preserved palaces in Vienna.

history

The Spanish Count Gabriel von Salamanca-Ortenburg , General Treasurer of the later Emperor Ferdinand I , acquired the original residential buildings from Wilhelm von Roggendorf in 1535, which were built on the site of today's palace. Shortly before his death in 1538 he commissioned a palace in the Renaissance style, which was completed in 1546. In 1592 the two families Hofkirchen and Losenstein became the new owners of the property and kept it until 1627. During this period there were several extensive renovations of the palace, which were carried out under Hans Wilhelm von Losenstein and Georg Andreas Freiherr von Hofkirchen and his wife Margarete von Losenstein, whose coat of arms can still be seen in the middle of the arcade. In 1627 the palace came into the possession of Count Wratislav zu Fürstenberg and in 1643 to Hans Helferich Jörger von Tollet . In 1667, Prince Johann Karl Porcia became the new owner of the palace, which gave it its current name. In the 18th century the property came first to the court chamberlain, Bartholomäus von Tinti , who also owned the Schallaburg , and in 1750 to the imperial court (since then a Habsburg coat of arms has adorned the façade facing Herrengasse).

In the period that followed, the palace housed public institutions such as the Administrative Court (from 1883), the Court of Auditors and the Provincial School Board for Lower Austria . The interior of the palace was adapted several times for this purpose. Since 1925 the palace has housed the Federal Administrative Library  (AB), and today it also houses the Information and Communication Technology  (ICT) center in the Federal Chancellery .
The last general renovation took place between 1991 and 1997. Smaller
art exhibitions are regularly held on the ground floor today .
