Palas (grape variety)
Palas is a German, newly bred red wine variety . It originated from a cross between the varieties Blaufränkisch and Teinturier du Cher , which is also called ruby grape in German usage . The original information provided by breeders Bernhard Schleip and Bernd HE Hill that it was a cross between Trollinger and ruby grapes has since been refuted by a DNA analysis.
It was presented in 1969 by the state teaching and research institute for viticulture and fruit growing in Weinsberg . In 2001 there was a planted vineyard area of around 8 hectares in Germany . Goddess of the grape variety is Gerdi Staiblin , former minister in the Ministry of Nutrition and Rural Areas of Baden-Württemberg .
The Palas grape variety was tested in experimental cultivation from 1984, and in 2002 plant variety protection was approved by the Federal Plant Variety Office .
Synonym: Breeding number We 69-633-14 F
Origin: the vine is a cross between the grape varieties Blaufränkisch x Teinturier du Cher (also called ruby grape )
Ampelographic varietal characteristics
In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The shoot tip is open.
- The medium-sized pentagonal leaves are five-lobed and hardly curved. The stem bay is open in a U-shape. The blade is serrated.
- The grape is medium-sized and medium-density berries. The rounded berries are medium-sized.
The grape variety ripens approx. 6–10 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late in Germany; In an international comparison it is considered one of the early ripening red grape varieties. It is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew and downy mildew . It is also sometimes attacked by the raw rot.
The variety produces dark, ruby-red wines and, similar to the Cabernet Mitos grape variety, is particularly suitable as a cover wine variety in blends. The vine has good winter hardiness; the taste of the wines is neutral, vinous and pleasant.
